Grand Seiko is ushering in an exciting era for its Evolution 9 collection, unveiling a total of nine new references. Among these, particular attention is drawn to the refreshed Hi-Beat series, comprising four esteemed models: the Night Birch, White Birch, Green Birch, and Genbi Valley. These latest iterations maintain their acclaimed mechanical movements but introduce refined materials and a significantly improved bracelet design, enhancing both their aesthetic appeal and wearer comfort.
These four updated timepieces preserve their signature design characteristics, including the 40mm case diameter, 11.7mm thickness, and 47mm lug-to-lug measurement. Each case exhibits Grand Seiko's meticulous craftsmanship, with sharp, multi-faceted surfaces that seamlessly blend brushed and Zaratsu-polished finishes. The watches are equipped with a box-shaped sapphire crystal, a transparent case back, and are water-resistant to 100 meters, thanks to a secure screw-down crown and case back. A notable upgrade sees the White Birch (now SLGH031) and Green Birch (now SLGH033) models crafted from the advanced Ever-Brilliant Steel, a material also featured in the Genbi Valley SLGH035, while the Night Birch SLGH029 continues to be presented in High-Intensity Titanium.
The dials of these watches continue to captivate with their intricate textures, mirroring natural elements such as the beloved birch forest in silver-white, black, and dark green, and the tranquil waters of Genbi Valley. These distinctive patterns, alongside the meticulously applied and faceted markers and hands, define Grand Seiko's unique visual identity. Powering all four models is the sophisticated in-house automatic calibre 9SA5. This movement is celebrated for its 5Hz (36,000vph) high-frequency Dual Impulse Escapement, coupled with a free-sprung balance, ensuring exceptional precision, enhanced shock resistance, and greater efficiency. With a slimmer profile and twin barrels, the calibre 9SA5 provides a robust 80-hour power reserve and maintains an impressive accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day. The movement's refined decoration, featuring beautifully crafted bridges and bevelled edges, further underscores Grand Seiko's commitment to horological excellence.
The most significant enhancement across these new Evolution 9 Hi-Beat models lies in their redesigned bracelet. Addressing feedback regarding earlier models' width and lack of tapering, Grand Seiko has introduced a more ergonomic bracelet with a pronounced taper, significantly improving wearability. Furthermore, echoing its successful integration in the Spring Drive UFA series, these new Hi-Beat watches now feature a three-step micro-adjustment clasp. This innovative clasp allows for precise, tool-free adjustments in 2mm increments, ensuring an optimal and customized fit for every wrist. This thoughtful upgrade underscores Grand Seiko's dedication to continuous improvement and user experience, marrying traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation to create timepieces that are not only aesthetically remarkable but also supremely comfortable for daily wear.
