Jacob & Co. Unveils The Godfather II Musical Timepiece

Instructions

Jacob & Co. proudly presents its latest creation, "The Godfather II," a remarkable timepiece that stands out for its unique ability to play two distinct melodies from the classic film: "The Godfather Waltz" and "The Godfather Love Theme." This exquisite watch, featuring a 510-component movement housed within a meticulously designed 42 x 44mm rose gold case, represents a significant achievement in intricate watchmaking. Benjamin Arabov shares insights into the development of this special edition, limited to just 74 pieces, commemorating the 1974 release of "The Godfather Part II," a personal favorite of both Jacob Arabo and his son, Benjamin.

The watch's design intricately weaves in cinematic elements, from the black lacquer dial adorned with Marlon Brando's portrait as Don Corleone and 3D puppet strings, to the engraved bullet holes on its case back, and a crown subtly echoing a gun barrel's spiral grooves. The case also features a delicate rose motif, another nod to Don Corleone. Beyond its striking aesthetics, the timepiece boasts a sapphire window on the case back, offering a glimpse into the sophisticated musical mechanism. This includes a turning cylinder and combs that produce the melodies, alongside a flying tourbillon and dual power reserve indicators. The innovative manual-winding caliber JCAM62 allows for song selection via a selector at 10 o'clock, with each melody playing for 15-20 seconds and capable of being replayed up to 10 times on a single wind. A mere millimeter shift, controlled by the selector, alters the pins engaging the comb, thus changing the tune—a testament to the watch's ingenious mechanical engineering.

This "Godfather II" timepiece is not merely a watch but a piece of kinetic art, a tribute to a cinematic masterpiece. It’s an evolution from its predecessor, the Opera Godfather, with its Art Deco-inspired, curved rectangular case offering a more ergonomic fit and a sleeker appearance, further enhanced by the dual-melody feature. While its $440,000 price tag and theatrical flair might not appeal to all, its blend of complex mechanics, artistic design, and profound homage to "The Godfather Part II" makes it a truly distinctive and compelling creation. This watch demonstrates how horology can transcend mere timekeeping to become a storytelling medium, enriching the wearer's experience with both visual and auditory narratives, truly embodying the spirit of ambitious craftsmanship.
